Weekend slots near ceremony dates are often gone two to four weeks out, and popular time slots (late morning and mid-afternoon) disappear first. If your ceremony date is fixed, book the studio the same week you receive it.

A few booking tactics: weekday slots are easier to secure and sometimes cheaper; shooting a week or two before your ceremony - Gowns can often be collected early - Avoids the crush entirely; and if a central studio is full, widen the search, since self studios now operate across many neighbourhoods in Singapore, not just town. Gown, sash and mortarboard logistics

The gown is the shoot's hero prop, so treat it well. Transport it on a hanger inside a garment bag - Folded gowns crease badly, and polyester creases show under studio lighting. Steam or iron it the night before; many studios do not have a steamer. Wear the gown open over your outfit for some frames and zipped for others, and check your sash or stole sits flat and centred before every burst - It drifts constantly.

Under the gown, keep it simple: a collared shirt or a plain dress in a light neutral photographs best, and you will want decent clothes for gown-off shots too. Walk in with a list - Session clocks run fast when three groups of people want photos. A structure that works:

• Solo (10–15 min): formal portrait with scroll; seated with mortarboard in hands; gown open and relaxed; a candid laughing frame; one "looking to the future" profile shot.
• Family (10–15 min): graduate flanked by parents; the whole family; grandparents with the graduate if present; parents adjusting your sash - An underrated emotional frame.
• Friend group (15–20 min): the formal row; the stacked formation at different heights; everyone pointing at one person's scroll; the walking shot; and the cap toss to finish.

Shoot in that order deliberately: solo while you are freshest, family while parents are patient, friends last because that energy sustains itself. Shooting a big cohort - The whole class, club or hall? A standard self-photo room gets tight past six people; for large groups, an hourly rental studio with wider backdrops is often the better booking.

Props: scrolls, confetti and the cap toss

Three props carry most grad shoots. The diploma scroll - Bring a decoy scroll or rolled certificate paper if you shoot before collecting the real one; nobody can tell. Confetti photographs brilliantly mid-air but is banned or chargeable at many studios - Always ask before bringing it, and consider paper streamers or a handful of dried petals as tidier alternatives. The cap toss costs nothing: use the interval timer, count down together and throw on the beat. Expect five attempts before caps and expressions align - That is normal and half the fun.

Timing your shoot around ceremony day

You have three windows, each with trade-offs. Before ceremony day: the calm option - Collect the gown early, shoot on a quiet weekday, look fresh, no time pressure. On ceremony day itself: maximum sentiment since family are already gathered and dressed, but you will be tired, the gown creased from hours of wear, and studios near ceremony venues are heavily booked; if you choose this, book a slot at least two hours after the ceremony ends and budget for travel and food.
