Nearly every self photo studio advertises unlimited shots within your slot, which is technically true and practically misleading. The camera will fire as often as you press. What runs out is time.
Knowing roughly where twenty minutes goes is the difference between leaving with a set you like and leaving with ninety near-identical frames of the first idea you had.
Where the Twenty Minutes Actually Goes
A realistic breakdown for a first session:

That accounts for the slot with nothing left over. The two line items people underestimate are the first three minutes, which always vanish, and outfit changes, which are never as fast as expected.
How Many Frames That Is
Actual shooting time in a 20-minute slot is around 10 to 13 minutes. At a comfortable pace of roughly one press every six to ten seconds - including resetting your pose - that is somewhere between 60 and 120 frames.

Plan Three Looks, Not Ten
The single highest-return preparation is deciding your looks before you arrive. Three is the right number for twenty minutes: one safe, one fun, one you would not normally try.
A look does not have to mean a full outfit change. Adding a jacket, letting hair down, switching to a different backdrop wall or moving from standing to seated all count and cost far less time. Full changes are the expensive ones.

When to Book Longer
Book 30 minutes or more if any of these apply: you are shooting with three or more people, you want more than two full outfit changes, there are children or elderly family members involved, or it is your first time and you would rather not feel rushed.

Do I get all the photos or just a few?
It varies by studio and is the single most important thing to check before booking. Some include every frame as a digital download; others include a fixed number and charge for the rest.
Can I extend if I run out of time?
Often, if the next slot is free. Ask at the counter before your time runs out rather than after - the extension is usually sold in 10 or 15 minute blocks.
Is 15 minutes ever enough?
For one person with one look, yes. For two people or two outfits, it will feel tight.
