What to Check With a Studio Before Handing Over Money
Published 26 October 2026 · By the Self Photo Studio Singapore team · Booking & logistics
Self photo studio pricing is simple on the surface and layered underneath. Two studios advertising the same headline figure can deliver very different value once you total what you actually want.
These nine questions take two minutes to ask and routinely change which studio is the better deal. Our price guide covers typical ranges; this is what to confirm before paying one.
Questions About What You Take Home
1. How many digital files are included, and are they the full set? This is the single biggest variable. Some studios include every frame; others include a chosen handful and sell the rest. A cheaper session that charges per file often ends up more expensive.
2. Are the digital files edited or straight out of camera? Both are fine, but they are different products. Edited usually means colour and exposure corrected, not retouched.
3. How long do you keep my files, and how do I receive them? Download links expire - often within 7 to 30 days. Know the window before you leave, and download on the day if you can.
Questions About the Room and the Time
4. How many people does the price cover, and what is each extra person? Per-pax and per-room pricing produce very different totals for a group of five.
5. Is the quoted time the room time or the total booking? Some studios count your changing and selection time within the slot; others do not.
6. Is there a changing area, and can I change inside the room? Decides whether multiple outfits are realistic.
7. Can I extend on the day, and at what rate? Extensions are usually 10 or 15 minute blocks and only if the next slot is free.
Questions About What Is In the Room
8. What backdrops and props are available, and are there restrictions? Backdrop colour affects your outfit choice - see separating yourself from the backdrop. Prop restrictions matter for costume or festival sessions, and most studios ban anything that sheds or burns.
9. What is the cancellation and reschedule policy? Deposits are common, and rescheduling windows vary from 24 hours to no changes at all.
Answers That Should Give You Pause
A studio that cannot tell you how many files are included, or that answers vaguely about extra-person charges, is one where the final bill will surprise you. Neither is necessarily dishonest - small studios genuinely improvise - but it is worth knowing before rather than after.
The other one to watch is a very short file-retention window paired with no on-the-day download option. If both are true, plan to bring a charged phone and enough storage, which is on our bag checklist.
Frequently asked questions
Is it rude to ask all nine?
No. Studios field these constantly and most publish half the answers already. Asking by message before booking is normal.
Which question matters most?
How many digital files are included. It changes the effective price more than anything else on the list.
Do prices differ on weekends?
Frequently, by 10 to 30 percent. Weekday off-peak is the cheapest way into the same room.
